Why do communist parties, SFI and DYFI in Kerala use the image of Che Guevara when he was against communism ?
He was greeted by Dr. B C Roy in Calcutta and was ignored by the Communists then. Cuba wasn’t a that great source of inspiration for CPI in India ever. Communist party in India, in 1959, when Guevara visited Calcutta, wasn’t divided yet and was strictly following the directions of Soviet union. Even after the separation of CPI [Marxism] in 1964, the two were primarily oriented towards China and Soviet union only, not Cuba. But these conditions don’t restrict them to not use his image as a symbol of protest, especially in left circle, like the many parts of world. After his death, Guevara became a symbol of ubiquitous and seminal symbol of youth revolutionaries around the world manifesting their aggression against the establishment. His legacy is evolving constantly in all dimension of revolution and in collective imagination of world.
Guevara also was not totally against communism, he only started criticizing soviet union about their policy in his later days of life. This became a major reason in rifting Fidel Castro and Guevara apart.
